Safety Auto and Homeowner Tips
If You are in an Accident:
Fill out the accident forms completely and accurately. Get all necessary information from any other drivers and passengers. Report the name and address of every person in the other auto(s), including those who were not apparently injured. If you have a camera in your car, take snapshots of the accident scene as well as the damage to each vehicle involved in the loss.
If You Suspect Fraud:If you have reason to believe that anyone involved in your motor vehicle accident or your insurance claim has committed fraud, Massachusetts policyholders should call the Insurance Fraud Bureau Hotline at
1-(800) 32-FRAUD or 1-(800) 323-7283.
For New Hampshire policyholders, report any suspected fraudulent activity to the New Hampshire Insurance Fraud Unit at 1-(800) 852-3416.
If You Have Information about an Auto Theft
Massachusetts policyholders should contact the Governor's Auto Theft Strike Force Hotline at 1-(800) HOT-AUTO or 1-(800) 468-2886. New Hampshire policyholders should contact the New Hampshire Insurance Fraud Unit at 1-(800) 852-3416.
Seat Belts
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires the use of seat belts for all operators and passengers riding in a private passenger motor vehicle. Infants and children under the age of 5 who weigh less than 40 pounds must ride in federally approved child safety seats. Beginning July 10, 2008, all children between the ages of 5-7 must ride in child booster seats until they reach 4'9" in height. Between the ages of 8-12, children must be restrained by a safety belt when traveling in a motor vehicle. The safest place for any child, in any restraint system, is in the back seat of a car.
Drivers can be stopped and fined $25 by the police for each unrestrained child.
New Hampshire law requires that all children under 18 years of age must wear a seat belt or be secured in a child seat, properly adjusted and fastened, while a passenger in a motor vehicle on any highway in the State.
A child less than 6 years of age and less than 55 inches in height shall be properly fastened and secured in a child passenger restraint which is in accordance with safety standards approved by the United States Department of Transportation.
The driver of the motor vehicle is responsible to assure that all children are properly restrained, except in the following:
- In a vehicle regularly used to transport passengers for hire.
- In a school bus with a gross vehicle weight in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- In an antique vehicle or on a motorcycle.
- If the child under 18 years of age has an individual education plan statement indicating that the use of restraints is not safe.
Travel Outside of your Home State
Policyholders who travel outside the state in which they are insured should take their insurance policy or proof of insurance with them. Your Safety agent can provide these forms to you or you may visit us online at www.SafetyInsurance.com and log in with your username and password. If you do not have an online account with us, please click on the Create My Account link and follow the 'Create My Account' instructions. Once you have created an online account, you may add your automobile policy by entering the policy number and the corresponding Online Access Code. Your policy's Online Access Code can be found on your monthly bill or EFT Statement. Once you have added your automobile policy to your online account, you will be able to click on "View Insurance Card" to obtain this information.
Safety Inspection Sticker and Registration Plates
It is your responsibility to make sure that your safety inspection sticker and registration plates are current. If you do not renew prior to the expiration dates, you may be fined and your insurance premium may be surcharged.
