Safety Insurance To Sponsor Guide For Teen Drivers

Safety teams with NH DMV and Driver Education Teachers Association to support parents coaching new drivers

MANCHESTER, NH (May 5, 2017) – Safety Insurance (NASDAQ: SAFT), a leading provider of auto, home and commercial insurance in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine, today announced that it will sponsor The Parent's Supervised Driving Program, a new resource for the guardians of student drivers, in partnership with the New Hampshire Driver Education Teachers Association (NHDETA). The sponsorship allows for this critically important, gold standard resource to be provided to NHDETA, on behalf of the DMV, for distribution to parents and teens at no cost to the state DMV nor to taxpayers. The program is geared toward skill development, and expanding the conditions and time that teens drive with their parents prior to driving independently.

"The New Hampshire Driver Education Teachers Association is excited to provide The Parent's Supervised Driving Program guidebook," said Sam Bisson, president of NHDETA. "The purpose of driver education is to instill safe driving habits that last a life time. By offering an enhanced supervised driving experience, we hope that parents and guardians will extend the supervised driving period beyond the state requirement of 40 hours."

Developed by Safe Roads Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting safer driving through education for drivers of all ages, The Parent's Supervised Driving Program is designed to improve teen driver safety by providing parents and guardians with a methodical approach to teaching the requisite driving skills.

"One in five teenage drivers is involved in a crash in their first year of driving. Safety Insurance's priority remains keeping our roads safe for all drivers and we aspire to make the transition for parents of young drivers easier. This unique guide arms parents and teens with an incredibly useful tool," said John Drago, vice president of marketing for Safety Insurance.

The Parent's Supervised Driving Program contains information and lessons on driving basics, parental pointers and licensing qualifications that are helpful to parents of new drivers.

The guidebook curriculum includes thirteen distinct driving skills, with additional tips on supervising teens after they successfully acquire a license. The program also offers the RoadReady ® mobile app, which can track the required supervised driving time of 40 hours; RoadReady is available in the App StoreSM. Additionally the curriculum is available online – guidebooks can be downloaded as a PDF at, and a robust digital platform is currently in development.

The program focuses on the role of parents in the teen driver education process and encourages parents and teens to drive together in a variety of weather conditions and unfamiliar settings, as well as various times of day and night. Some key areas of focus, and step-by-step instruction include: steering, backing up, parking and turning around, as well as driving on rural roads, city roads and highways.

In addition to, or as an alternate to tracking hours via the RoadReady app, the guidebook also includes a log for parents to track the hours of practice their teenager completes and manage the young driver's progress over time, as well as additional tips for inexperienced drivers such as "Distracted Driving" and "Teens Biggest Dangers."
